In former times the Da-an branch of the Liugongjun irrigation canal wound its way through the university grounds. But with the later expansion and development of the campus the waterway has since been paved over. At the suggestion of Professor Gan and others, work began in 2001 on the restoration of the canal. The pool itself, designed and engineered in accordance with ecological guidelines, comprises the first phase of the project. Since its inauguration in 2004, its clear waters and abundant vegetation has attracted numerous species of water fowl, such as the moorhen, savanna nightjar, spotted munia, magpies, and the little egret. The vicinity has also become a popular nature classroom for conservation groups.
